The art of post-production :
bring your photos to life!

Today I'd like to talk about post-production, a crucial stage in the creative process of photography. It's at this point that your photographs take shape and become "your finished works of art"..

Among the many tools available for this task, I'm going to talk about the ones I've been using personally for yearsDxO PhotoLab, Capture One and On1 Photo RAW, which offer powerful and flexible features.

We're going to explore how you can Use this software to unlock the hidden potential of your RAW files and turn them into stunning images.

I would like to highlight the difference between post-production and development which, in my opinion the development of its images and retouching which is (still in my opinion) themanipulating pixels in a pixel editor such as Photoshop or Affinity Photo.

Here we'll just talk about photo development.

1. Introduction to post-production

Above, I've mentioned the 3 programs I use regularlySo these are the ones I'm going to use in detail here.

On1 Photo RAW 2024

On1 Photo RAW is all-in-one image processing software which combines cataloguing, development editing and retouching capabilities (for a change 😜) in a single interface.

It has been designed for both professional and amateur photographers, to make the most of the time spent processing your images and offers a full range of tools to improve your photos, while maintaining optimum quality. Its indirect aim is to avoid the need for third-party plugins. With its batch processing capabilities and advanced correction tools, On1 Photo RAW is an effective solution.

DxO PhotoLab

DxO PhotoLab 7 is image processing software very powerful thanks to its algorithms and automatic functions known for its cutting-edge optical correction modules and advanced RAW processing capabilities.

It has been designed for demanding professional and amateur photographers, and offers powerful editing tools and a wide range of functions. image management functions directly on your hard disk (without prior cataloguing) in a fluid, intuitive interface.

It features unique dematrixing, denoising and optical aberration correction technology to optimise the quality of photos, even when captured in difficult conditions.. It has batch processing capabilities, which makes DxO PhotoLab a robust solution with an efficient and flexible workflow. exceptional picture quality.

Capture One (C1)

Capture One is top-of-the-range image processing software specially designed to meet the needs of professional photographers. It features advanced colour management, precise RAW development tools and sophisticated retouching capabilities, all with a hyper-customisable interfacedifferent workspaces for sorting, colour processing, etc., depending on the actions in progress.

Designed as a whole to maximise workflow efficiencyCapture One offers a comprehensive range of tools for cataloguing and editing images, so you can achieve high-quality results without the need for additional plug-ins.

What's more, its batch processing functions and powerful tethering options (connected capture) make it the preferred choice for studio photographers looking for a complete, high-performance solution.

2. Managing and organising files

Before diving into the creative aspects of post-production, it's essential to organise your files properly.

On1 Photo RAW 2024

On1 Photo RAW offers 2 possibilities: umanagement of your images directly on disk onor intuitive cataloguing which lets you classify your photos by folders, keywords and ratings etc. to make it easier for you to search later, filter your images, and simplify the selection and management process.

In other words, you can browse your hard disks and folders, then catalogue just what you want, archiving folders you won't be needing for a long time. So On1 Photo Raw lets you work and switch back and forth between the catalogue and the hard disk very easily! On this point it's a hydric 😅 !

DxO PhotoLab

DxO PhotoLab works directly on the folders on your hard disk. So no time is wasted cataloguing, but when you browse your photo folders, DxO PhotoLab creates an index of your images, by metadata, exif, keywords etc... Which means that without prior cataloguing, it has an "internal table of contents It is self-managed and when a search request is made, it is intelligent and will retrieve all the images requested.

Capture One (C1)

Capture One (C1) is another story, because you have 2 work options traditional cataloguing or session cataloguing.

A bit like On1 Photo Raw, which has this ambivalence but Capture One will work either in a catalogue or as a session. You will need to choose.

The session is perfect for a project, model or wedding shoot, and once that job is done, you can archive your session on an archive hard drive or import that session into a C1 catalogue to centralise all your sessions so you can browse all your files more easily later. Note that you can create and open as many catalogues or sessions as you like (at least, as many as your computer will support 🤓 ).

Please note: Now that we have meta-cataloggers such as Peakto This means you can centralise all your sessions and hard drives under a single interface, without eating up too much space on your working disk.

To help you organise your images, I invite you to read this dedicated article because that would make this one far too long! 🤓 And my workflow in this article.

Organising your files efficiently is the first step in ensuring smooth, structured post-production.

3. Developing your images

Once you have organised your files, these 3 programs offer a suite of powerful tools for correcting and improving your photos. Here is what I suggest to get you started on developing your photos:

  • Exposure and Colour Settings Start by correcting the exposure, then the contrast plus or minus (depending on the dynamic range of your image), then the white balance to correct overall colour deviations. Then adjust the shadows, blacks, whites and highlights and finish by adjusting the colours individually with the TSL tool. I advise you to work in this order because adjusting the light tones will modify the colours, which then means adjusting their luminance and saturation. Tll of the software programmes mentioned above allow you to make these precise adjustments using dynamic sliders.
  • Crop and balance the horizon of your photos.
  • Noise Reduction Digital noise: Images taken in low-light conditions can contain digital noise. The noise reduction modules in each of the software packages help to clean up images while preserving important details. The weakest here is Capture One, which does not have advanced noise reduction like On1 Photo Raw or DxO PhotoLab excels in this area. If you use Capture One, you can use the DxO Pure Raw plugin (which works as a stand-alone program) to prepare your images from a technical point of view (correction of optical distortions, chromatic aberrations, sharpness, vignetting and noise) before continuing with C1.
  • Objective correction Correct distortion and chromatic aberration with the built-in tools. DxO PhotoLab offers advanced, scientifically developed correction profiles (via the optical modules) for a wide variety of lenses, guaranteeing unparalleled sharpness and precision. That said, On1 Photo Raw and Capture One offer perfectly decent results.

4. Creating artistic looks

This software not only processes and corrects errors, but also adds artistic touches and style to your photos:

  • Filters, Luts and Effects : Explore a wide range of filters, Luts and effects to transform the atmosphere of your images. Whether you want to create a vintage effect, add artistic flair, blur or intensify colours, they all offer a variety of options for personalising your photos.
  • Retouching Brushes To take things a step further, retouching brushes or U-point technology for DxO PhotoLab can be used to apply local adjustments, such as sharpening details or attenuating the luminance or colour of specific areas. These tools are ideal for fine-tuning the elements of your photos and drawing attention to particular points of interest.

5. Using presets and styles

Presets, styles or presets are 3 different names for the same thing 🥺 depending on the software. They are fast (created by yourself or the creators of this software) to apply adjustments to several photos : batch processing. This way you get a series of photos that are consistent in terms of light, colour and contrast.

  • Vou have global presets which will adjust all the parameters of your images at once, so you can fine-tune the adjustments you make and then synchronise the fine-tuning between your images.
  • Or, you can use granular presetsIn other words, always process your images in batches, but step by step, starting with highlights, shadows, contrast, colours, etc. (personally, this is what I prefer 🤓).

6 Exploring, sharing and printing

Once your photos are edited and ready, all that's left to do is export, share and, better still, print them 🥳! All the software mentioned in this article will allow you to do all that.

  • Export settings Choose from a range of file formats and resolutions to meet your needs, whether for online publishing or high-quality printing.
  • Print from your software Whether it's C1, DxO PhotoLab or On1 Photo Raw, each of them has a print module with a whole host of options (contact sheet, margins, name, etc.) that will allow you to print at home (if you have a photo printer, of course). After a few tries and re-corrections of your images, you should be able to find what you're looking for on paper!

7. Conclusion

As you can see, post-production involves a whole host of steps to bring your photos to life! Whatever software you choose, you'll have all the tools you need to correct, enhance and personalise your images in a professional way.

Whether you're an amateur or a seasoned professional, mastering developing will give your photos an unrivalled sparkle and personality.
