Head for Kabelvåg: the authentic charm of Lofoten

For this next stage of our trip to Norway, we're heading for KabelvågThe Lofoten Islands are a small town in the south of the Lofoten Islands. Nestling between craggy mountains and fjords, this old fishing town is one of the oldest villages in Lofoten, steeped in history and tradition. With its peaceful atmosphere and breathtaking scenery, Kabelvåg promises total immersion in the authenticity of the archipelago.

1. Head for Kavelbåg, a small town in the south of the Lofoten Islands

After an unforgettable 24-hour stopover in Andenes, marked by a sea safari to meet the giants of the ocean, we're back on the road for a new stage in our Norwegian adventure: Kabelvågto the south of the Lofoten Islands. This 240 kmThe route, which zigzags through mountains rising straight out of the sea, offers a unique backdrop. Fjords, rocky and white sandy beaches and isolated villages punctuate this fascinating route, which bears witness to the raw beauty of Norway.

2. Stay in Kabelvåg: in a typical Lofoten rorbu

For these 4 days in the south of Lofoten, we chose to stay in a rorbuThese red fishermen's huts on stilts are emblematic of the region (see image at the top of the article). Once used by fishermen for shelter during the cod season, these dwellings have now been transformed into comfortable accommodation, while retaining their rustic charm.

Fitted out like real family flats, the rorbuer can accommodate up to 4 people and offer breathtaking views of the sea and mountains. Just settling in gives you the feeling of being totally immersed in local life, both authentic and peaceful. This ideal base allowed us to explore all the southern Lofoten IslandsA region rich in activities, historic sites and exceptional landscapes.

3. Discover the highlights of Kabelvåg and the surrounding area

Kabelvåg: a village full of charm and history

Kabelvåg was once the hub of the Lofoten fishing industry, but it has managed to preserve its authenticity while opening up to visitors. Among the main attractions not to be missed:

  • The Lofoten Museum A fascinating place to delve into local history and discover the daily lives of fishermen of the time.
  • The Lofoten aquarium The perfect way to find out more about the region's marine wildlife, particularly the local species.
  • Lofoten Cathedral Vågan Church: This wooden church, known as Vågan Church, is one of the largest in Norway and offers a glimpse of the region's religious heritage.
  • The ice sculpture museum An original and surprising visit, where art meets nature, perfect for a different kind of outing.

Eggum: between wild nature and historic remains

A short distance away, Eggumlocated on the west coast of Lofoten, is also well worth a visit. It is famous for :

  • Its rocky beach The ideal spot for a contemplative stroll facing the immensity of the ocean.
  • Its amphitheatre A fascinating building offering exceptional views of the surrounding area, particularly at sunset.
  • Remnants of the Second World War A former German radar, testimony to a bygone era, still stands here.

Eggum is also an ideal destination for admiring the natural phenomena characteristic of the Arctic Circle: the midnight sun in summer or the polar night in winterwhere the starry sky becomes the perfect backdrop for the Northern Lights.

Henningsvær: the jewel of Lofoten

Not far from Kabelvåg, Henningsværoften referred to as the "Venice of Lofoten", is a village with an authentic atmosphere. Connected by picturesque bridges, it is renowned for :

  • Breathtaking views from the heights An accessible hike takes in breathtaking views of the village and surrounding area.
  • Wild camping Henningsvær: For adventure-seekers, Henningsvær offers dream pitches by the sea, where peace and quiet reign supreme.

4. Reine: the postcard village of Lofoten

Finally, to conclude this exploration, Queenat the southern tip of the Lofoten Islands is a must. This small fishing village looks straight out of a postcard, with its colourful huts, mountain backdrop and calm waters. It's a perfect example of typical Lofoten charm and an ideal place to simply stroll around or capture some dreamy landscape shots.

5. Lofoten: a paradise for nature lovers

Between fjords, beaches, mountains and picturesque villages, the Lofoten Islands offer a unique experience. Whether you're a history buff, a nature enthusiast or looking for spectacular scenery, this archipelago has it all. And for those who love adventure, this northern region, between the Vesterålen and Lofotenis a must-see destination.

These islands, where tradition and natural beauty coexist, must be discovered at least once in a lifetime. The mix of rugged mountains, white sandy beaches and majestic fjords makes this a place quite simply out of the ordinary.
